Zandra I. Flemister graduated from Northeastern University in 1973, and in 1974 was the first African American woman hired as a Secret Service Special Agent. Zandra later found her calling in the State Department to fulfill her life ambition for service and travel. She retired as a Senior Foreign Service Officer in 2011 as dementia began to take its toll and passed away February 21, 2023. To honor Zandra’s legacy and continue her impact, the endowed Fellows Program will support new generations of changemakers studying in the field of international relations. Nominated undergraduate students will serve as Flemister Fellows will benefit from exclusive mentorship and experiential learning opportunities at the Center of International Affairs and World Cultures.
